Our Humble Beginnings: A Look Back at How It All Started

The Goose Hung High AA group officially began its journey on April 10, 2015, thanks to the dedication and collaborative efforts of founding members Joe Mc, Robbie and Dawn W., Valerie B., Teresa H., Sue T., David and Charlsa P., John S., Patricia C., and David B. Motivated by a clear need for an Alcoholics Anonymous-focused meeting closer to Eva, AL, these committed individuals came together and established a fellowship deeply rooted in AA literature and principles.

In choosing their meeting time—Sunday afternoons at 3:00—the founders remained faithful to AA’s 4th Tradition, carefully avoiding conflicts with other meetings in Eva, Cullman, and Hartselle.

What’s Behind the Name?

Many ask about the origin of our unique name, “Goose Hung High.” It reflects a poignant reference drawn from “Bill’s Story,” found in Chapter 1, page 7, of the AA Big Book. Bill describes a temporary phase of self-perceived control over drinking:

“For three or four months the goose hung high. I went to town regularly and even made a little money. Surely this was the answer—self-knowledge. But it was not, for the frightful day came when I drank once more.”

Our group’s name serves as a reminder that self-knowledge alone is not sufficient for lasting sobriety. We must continually engage in the program and fellowship of AA.

Evolution and Growth

Initially, meetings took place under challenging conditions—in a surplus sporting goods warehouse off Eva Road, complete with folding chairs and noisy industrial fans. While memorable (members occasionally left meetings with fishing gear or even a canoe!), comfort became a priority, and the group sought a more welcoming space. In fall 2015, thanks to the generosity of the First Church of the Nazarene in Cullman, Goose Hung High found its enduring home at 5415 AL Highway 157, Cullman, AL 35058.

Over the years, our meeting format evolved to include studying AA’s Steps, Traditions, the 11th Step, World Service Concepts, and eventually the Service Manual. The group’s commitment to AA literature remains steadfast, keeping members grounded in the core principles of recovery.

Gratitude and Responsibility

From the outset, Goose Hung High embraced financial responsibility by establishing an account with People’s Bank and contributing quarterly to our host church, GSO, Area, and District. We remain deeply grateful to those early members whose generosity and foresight laid a foundation of responsibility, gratitude, and service.

Today, our group’s heartbeat remains the love and fellowship that inspires ongoing recovery. We extend heartfelt thanks to each founder, every past and present member, and everyone who has contributed to our group’s longevity and strength.

Celebrate with us on May 3rd. Reflect on our rich past, rejoice in present sobriety, and strengthen our unity for the future. Together, let’s proudly honor a decade of sobriety, service, and fellowship.

See you there!
