District 2 Archive (Living Document)
!!If you have ANY INFORMATION BEFORE 2008, please reach out to district Archive Committee Chair!!
This information has been collected from district members and uses their best recollections. This is not meant to be a complete history of the district. We will continually add information to this document as it becomes available.
The committee contacted several long-timers to gain some history for District 2. Gene H. remembers involvement in the Hartselle Hope group and talked with a long-time member about the activities in earlier days. According to others, the only District “meetings” held were when 3-4 gathered during Area Assemblies in Montgomery at the Governor’s House Hotel. These were informal, and no minutes were taken.
Confirmed History
2008-2009
- Mike P. became involved in District activities around 2008-09 and attended a District meeting with Rick L., Tony L., and Dotson.
- At the time, there were five groups in District 2, but only 2-3 groups were involved in District activities. (Hartselle, Blountsville, Allgood)
- In that time frame, Gary N. and others in Hartselle secured a computer and a rather costly internet “business” line for Hartselle Hope, where they set up a kind of makeshift Intergroup Office with a computer, website, and call forwarding connection. Individual members agreed to take blocks of time to answer calls.
- Some also discussed purchasing Literature and medallions for the groups to purchase via this “Office,” but nothing substantial materialized over the long term. Gary N., the spearhead of this action, left the Hartselle area, and the Internet “business” line at HH was discontinued.
- David P. took over the District Website management, and the Website The12Traditions.com was launched in February 2016.
Events
In 2014, at a District meeting at the Cullman Downtown location, it was discussed that District 2 should merge with a neighboring district in Arab due to the lack of group participation and money. This idea met with great opposition, and it was decided that the district would renew efforts to serve member groups and refocus on overall service.
2014
- In November 2014, the 1st Gratitude Dinner was held at the Angler Restaurant to raise money for the district. Patrice S. (Atlanta) was the Speaker
- The first district workshop was held in Hartselle in the spring. It was the 12 Traditions Play.
- Since the first workshop, the district has conducted at least one workshop per year, including:
- 12 Traditions Play
- Sponsorship
- Guidelines for Chairing Meetings
- History of Program
- Traditions Play (2nd time)
- Conscious Contact Step 11 – Spirituality
2015
- The 2nd Gratitude Dinner at the Angler Restaurant – Dan L. was the Speaker.
2016
- The first Chili Supper began to raise funds to support District Activities. These events featured speakers and/or workshops, and members provided chili, which lowered costs with no real overhead.
- Those have continued annually in Oct / Nov since.
2024
- The Founders’ Day Picnic, established in (??) and held on the weekend before or after June 10, moved from Rickwood Caverns State Park to the Cullman Sportsman Lake location. Each picnic featured an AA and Al-Anon speaker.

District Meetings
2025 Quarterly District meetings are now routine. District participation by member groups is increasing. The Grace of God Group has not historically participated in District activities, but a renewed effort is being made to involve them.
The district has been active in Area 1 and is participating through committees and individual efforts in Cooperating with the Professional Community (CPC), Corrections, and Public Information (PI) aspects of the 3rd Legacy.
